Withdrawal Deadline Extended Starting Fall 2010

Following much discussion concerning the deadline to withdraw from semester long classes, the class deans brought forth a proposal to the Educational Policy Committee (EPC) to change the deadline to withdraw from classes.

The proposal was tossed about EPC where concerns about any given extensions to the withdrawal deadline were fleshed out. While the EPC recognized that an extension to the deadline could allow for some students to simply postpone putting real effort into a class, we decided that such an extension would best serve students who needed the extra time to determine their standing in a given class, especially considering that many professors don’t return a sizable amount of work before the current deadline, which for those of you thinking about withdrawing is APRIL 15, therefore not allowing students to assess their performance in the class. This extension will allow students to be more ambitious with regard to their course-load while offering more insurance in the event that the work proves to be overwhelming.

On the EPC we resolved to set the new deadline to one week before the last day of classes. Our reasoning for choosing this time frame is that one week will give students ample time to get back assessments from professors and to determine if they are able to finish the class with an upcoming final exam, project or paper. Furthermore, one week before classes end typically does not involve frantic panic that could result in a rash decision to drop a class. Enjoy our new deadline next year!
